David Hansen, a tax lawyer and a shareholder in the ScottHulse Law Firm, represents clients during tax audits, administrative appeals, and tax litigation as well as assisting with tax planning and nonprofit tax matters. He also represents clients on intellectual property matters as a trademark attorney.

Since joining the Firm, Mr. Hansen has negotiated offers in compromise with the IRS and has litigated and won cases before the United States Tax Court. He has also assisted numerous non-profit organizations in their applications for tax-exempt status. Mr. Hansen has helped both for-profit and non-profit entities with tax and corporate structure planning, including formations, mergers, conversions, and sales of entities. He has also assisted individuals with estate planning and sales of real estate.

Mr. Hansen came into the practice of law with practical business experience. He earned a Master of Business Administration from Cornell University and co-founded the International Institute for Biomedical Research (IIBR), a pharmaceutical research organization that became one of the leaders in the field of obesity and diabetes research. In addition to contributing to the growth of the company, Mr. Hansen helped negotiate the sale of the business to a large overseas corporation.

While earning his Juris Doctor degree with honors from the University of Texas – Austin, School of Law, Mr. Hansen demonstrated both academic skill and a commitment to advocacy. He won the Championship of the school’s Mediation Competition, received the Dean’s Achievement Award for the best grade in Advocacy Survey, and was a semi-finalist in his school’s Intermediate Mock Trial Competition. He was Technology Editor of the Texas Intellectual Property Law Journal. He served as a Teacher’s Assistant to Prof. Calvin Johnson in numerous tax classes. He also interned with Justice Patti Kitching of the California Court of Appeals, 2nd District, and Judge Cheryl Johnson of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

After law school, Mr. Hansen gained additional specialization in tax law, earning his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University. He served as an in-house tax advisor to the International Health Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, helping them re-instate their tax exemption. He also worked as an Attorney Advisor to the Social Security Administration before joining ScottHulse as an associate attorney in the Firm’s Tax Law practice group.

Mr. Hansen is active in the El Paso Community, serving as Chairman of the local Board of the American Red Cross and a Board Member for the local chapter of the Boy Scouts of America. He is also an active member of the Coronado Baptist Church and has traveled on a charity mission to Guatemala. Mr. Hansen is a Member of the El Paso Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

  • Planned restructuring of the multi-tiered structure of partnerships and S corporations in order to minimize adverse tax consequences from accumulated E&P.
  • Negotiated settlement of $350,000+ tax debt for <$25,000 under and offer in compromise.
  • Utilized Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Procedures to disclose and settle taxes on multi-million dollar unreported financial assets.
  • Planned and implemented multi-million dollar reorganizations, split-ups, spin-offs, buyouts, and partnership divisions.
  • Drafted and filed numerous articles of organization, bylaws, certificates of formation, organizational consents.
  • Prepared and filed numerous trademark applications.
  • Negotiated purchase of trademark applications between unrelated parties.
